The Liberal-National Government is committed to reducing barriers to women’s equal participation in leadership and decision-making roles. Increasing the representation of women in leadership roles leads to better outcomes for everyone and we are engaged in strategies that will increase the representation of women in senior leadership positions, break down barriers that prevent women from joining government boards and committees and look at how we can build better networks and opportunities.
Since 2011, NSW employment has increased by 506 000 jobs and approximately 62% of these new jobs have been taken up by women.
Over the years, women have increasingly secured jobs in non-traditional trades such as engineering, information technology, and horticulture.
There are significant economic benefits for women involved in non-traditional trades including increased choice and availability of jobs and increased job security.
Several trades in NSW, including electrical, plumbing, motor mechanics and cabinet makers, are experiencing skill shortages. Encouraging women to seek relevant qualifications and employment in these trades can address this skill shortage.
Recently, women have been at the forefront of a jobs boom sweeping across regional NSW. Regional NSW has added 90,400 jobs since the 2015 election, with almost 79 per cent of those represented by women. This data a testament to the hardworking women right across our state.
The Strategy affirms our Government’s commitment to empowering women and girls to have full access to opportunity and choice, be valued for their diversity, be recognised for their contribution, and be able to participate in all aspects of life freely and safely.
The strategy identifies three priority areas for action:
The Government wants to ensure the barriers are removed to enable women and girls to live the lives they choose.
We are determined to keep women and children safe in their own homes, at work and online. We are reforming the domestic violence system in NSW and have implemented the NSW Domestic and Family Violence Blueprint for Reform 2016-2021: Safer Lives for Women, Men and Children, In 2014, I was appointed to the NSW Government’s Violent Domestic Crimes Taskforce to examine the effectiveness of current laws and reporting of domestic violence. We made 18 recommendations which were accepted by the NSW Government covering six key themes:
The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government publishes an annual Women in NSW report which examines gender equity against indicators in five key areas: health and wellbeing, education and learning, work and financial security, leadership, and safety and justice.
The Women in NSW Health and Wellbeing Report focuses on issues where the detrimental health impact is disproportionately experienced by women, or where the response is different for women than for men. Partnering with industry and the non-government sector industry we are delivering services and programs to help women to meet their physical, social and economic potential, by increasing opportunities for women to be healthy at every stage in their lives and preventing avoidable health outcomes.
