PHONIC CHECK NOW ON DEMAND

An on-demand diagnostic tool that tells teachers how students are progressing in phonics is now available for all NSW public school students.

The Phonics Diagnostic Assessment follows the success of the NSW Government’s Year 1 Phonics Check which will be mandatory for this year.

Cabinet Secretary, the Hon Natasha Maclaren-Jones MLC said phonics is essential for our teachers to understanding our student’s development.

“We have learnt that phonics is a critical tool in assisting students in learning how to read,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.

BIG WIN FOR THE STATE WITH DINE & DISCOVER EXTENDED TO JULY 31

The NSW Government’s Dine & Discover initiative will be extended by a month to give people more time to use their vouchers, whether that be eating out or trying a new activity this winter.

The latest data shows more than 4.23 million people in NSW have downloaded the vouchers since they were launched in March, spending a combined total of more than $357 million with registered businesses when adding in the additional spend on top of the voucher amount.

MORE NEW AND IMPROVED PLAY SPACES ON THE WAY

Funding applications are now open to build new and improved inclusive play spaces, with $5 million available for communities across NSW.

The Honourable Natasha Maclaren-Jones MLC, Government Whip in the Legislative Council said the NSW Government had expanded the successful $15 million Everyone Can Play program to ensure more people can enjoy improved public parks.

“We’re committed to creating play spaces everyone can enjoy,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.

NSW WELCOMES 208 FIREFIGHTERS

The Honourable Natasha Maclaren-Jones MLC, Government Whip in the Legislative Council has welcomed 208 new Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) recruits, after their graduation at the FRNSW Emergency Services Academy in Orchard Hills. 

Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the new permanent and on-call firefighters.

“Becoming a firefighter is no easy feat. FRNSW attracts up to 8000 applications each year, yet of these thousands, only an elite few are chosen,” Mr Elliott said.
