NDIS ROLLOUT DATES ANNOUNCED

Member of the Legislative Council Natasha Maclaren-Jones today welcomed the announcement by Minister for Disability Services John Ajaka that the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be coming to NSW from July 2016.

Mr Ajaka said that today’s announcement acknowledges the hard work undertaken since July 2013 when the first NDIS trial site was established in the Hunter.

“The NSW Government is committed to breaking down barriers for people with disability and I am delighted to announce the rollout schedule for the NDIS in NSW,” Mr Ajaka said.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR LANDCARE COORDINATORS

Member of the Legislative Council Natasha Maclaren-Jones has encouraged local Landcare networks and community-based organisations to consider applying to host a Local Landcare Coordinator in their community.

Applications opened today as part of the NSW Government’s $15 million NSW Local Landcare Coordinator Initiative that will unlock the full potential of conservation volunteers throughout the state over the next four years.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR COMMUNITY WAR MEMORIAL GRANTS

Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott and Natasha Maclaren-Jones, Member of the Legislative Council, today encouraged veteran groups, community organisations and councils to apply for grants of up to $10,000 to protect war memorials.

The NSW Community War Memorials Fund was established to help repair, conserve and restore war memorials across the state. Grants are offered twice a year and applications for round one close on Remembrance Day - November 11, 2015. All submissions are assessed by the State War Memorials Committee.

TREATMENT OF INMATES SERVING LIFE SENTENCES

An Upper House inquiry has been established to examine the security classification and custodial management of inmates sentenced to life imprisonment.

It has been reported that prisoners facing life behind bars have been reclassified from maximum security prisons to medium and minimum security facilities, resulting in concerns that these inmates are being treated too leniently, especially considering the seriousness of their crimes.
